The Mint Museum (Uptown) - Charlotte, NC

October 12, 2019

"Immersed in Light: Studio Drift"

I was in Charlotte for the weekend for a college tour, and decided to research a local Art Museum I could visit. I Googled "Art museums in Charlotte" and all of the reviews stated that the Mint Museum had lots of Art that was new and interesting. I was very curious and excited to see what this museum contained. When I approached the Mint, my initial impression was that the architecture of the building was very pleasing to the eye.

The Mint Museum seemed to be newer than my hometown museum. I immediately noticed that there was more diversity in the ages of the featured artists than the main Art museum in my native city. The Mint contained artwork of many artists who were in their 20s and 30s, which is not typical of many other museums that I have encountered. I found it very refreshing to see the artwork of younger artists displayed in a large museum like the Mint.

"Immersed in Light: Studio Drift" was the title of the exhibit that was featured. I found this particular exhibit really cool and eye opening because it combined the elements of technology and nature to create New Age art. The exhibit incorporated technology and nature in shocking ways that were so creative. For example, one installation had light fixtures that went from the ceiling to the floor. The light fixtures contained actual, real-life dandelions that surrounded the light bulbs and actually resembled glass bulbs. What I found super impressive about this exhibit was that it was made in collaboration with 25+ artists, which I know had to challenging because artists do not often like to work in groups.

I spent approximately four hours exploring the different floors of artwork at the Mint Museum, and I was very impressed by what I saw. I found the Museum to have a diverse showing of artwork, from artists of various backgrounds and ages. My experience at the Mint was exciting, and a lot of the artwork was very new and "fresh", compared to the artwork in my hometown museum. I highly recommend that you visit The Mint Museum (Uptown) if you are visiting Charlotte. I can't wait to go back!
