Sculpture Project: Something New, and Delightfully Unexpected

November 2021

In my sculpture class I created a shoe that introduced me to the world of shoe design. Prior to this project, I had struggled severely with creating attractive three dimensional art objects. This shoe project made me realize I could develop my skills in sculpture. For this particular assignment, we were tasked with creating a soft sculpture of an object we liked. Immediately, I thought of shoes, in particular, my high top Converses. I began selecting some of the “hand me down” fabrics the printing teacher gifted to my sculpture class. I created the skeleton of this shoe sculpture using cardboard, and encased it with velvet green, yellow-flower embossed couch cover, and cadmium yellow fabrics. I added tassels and selected light green string for the shoe laces. As I completed this project, I realized my deep attraction to fashion as an Art form. I started to pay attention to the shoes on people's feet as they walked by, wondering what those shoes said about the wearer and noticing how they were paired with a certain outfit. I began to look at shoe design schools and research how design and fashion is aligned with the Fine Arts. At the end of the soft sculpture project, I decided to engage with my interest in fashion and design as much as I can while focusing on Fine Art as my first priority. The soft sculpture led me to the realization that I truly love fashion and design as much as I love Fine Art. I appreciate the shoe sculpture project for helping me reach the realization that I will engage with fashion and design in my Art career in the near future.

I enjoy devoting a lot of time and energy to the details. I created this "logo" (seen below) from green yarn, and fashioned it after the image seen on my Converse high tops. Although the logo is fairly small in size, I took approximately two hours to create it.
