My piece being recognized! Ms. Hilton, my Art Me with an amazing teacher! sculpture artist!
The African American Cultural Festival was a great experience for me. The festival was held in the beginning of the school year (the first week before school), after I hadn’t drawn one single thing all summer. I had been so busy with my summer job, track practices, and my Health Sciences internship. I also took a break because my wrist was in pain from drawing and I was becoming a little bored with it. My Art teacher, Ms. Hilton, who has been helping me with my Art since freshman year, submitted my graphite drawing in the competition for the AACF. Honestly, I thought I wasn’t even going to win because she had to choose between my piece and a very talented senior’s artwork. But I ended up winning, and was able to represent my school. At the festival, I was able to meet other crazy-talented artists back stage, like this one sculptor who creates these amazing sculptures that I honestly couldn’t even imagine doing. Being recognized in the festival exposed me to different Art styles and inspirations. I walked around for a couple of hours after the recognition ceremony, and just explored other artists’ work. The AACF taught me that I have to focus and try to improve myself every day to become a better artist.
